About Agnes Margery Luke
Agnes Margery Luke was born on November 21, 1950, in Bee Hive, Guyana, the first child of Herbert Luke, a dedicated headmaster, and Emily Seymour, a devoted homemaker who later became a church elder. The family moved to Georgetown shortly after the birth of Agnes’s younger sister, Rose—a move that marked the beginning of the Luke family’s lasting influence in the community.
A bright and ambitious student, Agnes earned a scholarship in 1962 to attend the prestigious Bishop’s High School in Georgetown, an all-girls institution known for academic excellence.
In 1969, she left Guyana to pursue higher education at York University in Toronto, Canada. There, she met Godfrey Griffith, and together they raised three children: Shelley, Ajene, and Khary.
Agnes built a successful career as a life insurance underwriter, spanning more than four decades with companies such as Manulife, Mony Life, RBC, and BMO. Her professional integrity and work ethic left a lasting impression on colleagues and clients alike.
Beyond her career, Agnes remained deeply connected to her roots. She was an active member of her high school alumni network and a proud contributor to Toronto’s vibrant Guyanese community.
Agnes is lovingly remembered by her brother Richard, her sister Rose, her children Shelley, Ajene, and Khary, and her cherished grandchildren. Her legacy of strength, service, and love lives on through them.
